Politics: Ol' Strom
Slate.com features an at-once thoughtful and light piece on Strom Thurmond's black daughter. Strom apparently had a relationship with a black house servant named Essie Butler, yielding a daughter (now in her 70s) named Essie Mae Washington Williams. Strom visited his daughter and may have even paid her tuition at her South Carolina HBC.
Apparently all this was unearthed in a biography of Thurmond from 1998.
