Politics: Estrada Withdraws
Miguel Estrada, who President Bush has nominated twice for a seat on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, has withdrawn his name from consideration after seven unsuccessful cloture votes to break a Democratic filibuster.
Estrada refused to answer questions about his judicial philosophy. Estrada, like many of Bush's judicial nominees, was so conservative as to be out of the mainstream, and was considered a stealth attempt to appeal to Latino voters while still packing the Court with right-wing nuts.
Good riddance. Of course, this doesn't do anything to take the wind out of the sails of the crazy GOP "anti-Catholic bias" argument, which is absolutely insane. Be on the lookout for a battle this fall over Janice Rogers Brown, also nominated to the D.C. Circuit.
